On April 17-18, the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot, Poland, hosted the next “RAW – Retreat And Wither” – What is the influence of glaciers recession from tidewater to land-based on the marine biological production and biogeochemistry in the Arctic? project meeting.
During the meeting was discussed the scope of field works that are planned for the summer season on Svalbard, popular science activities, as well as the topic of publications being prepared based on the data acquired within the framework of the project.
The meeting was attended by project participants from the leader, the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and partner units – the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. The project leader is Prof. Mateusz Moskalik from the Department of Polar and Marine Research, IG PAS.
The goal of the RAW project is to determine productivity changes in Arctic fjords as a result of glaciers recession. This will contribute to understanding the future role of coastal polar areas in the global carbon cycle in the face of climate change.
The project has received funding under the GRIEG competition funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 (contract number: UMO-2019/34/H/ST10/00504).
